Tips from a Local Guide Who Grew Up with These Wonders in His Backyard

The Pyramids of Giza are on almost every traveler’s list — and for good reason. Seeing them in person is completely different from reading about them or watching a documentary. You don’t just look at history; you feel it. But if this is your first visit, there are a few things you’ll want to know ahead of time — and as someone who’s led hundreds of tours there, I’m happy to share a few tips.

Getting There

If you’re staying in Hurghada, the fastest way to reach the pyramids is by plane. A short flight to Cairo saves you hours of road travel and gives you more time to explore. We usually pick guests up early in the morning, fly into the capital, and head straight to Giza — that way, you beat the worst of the traffic and the midday heat.

Best Time to Visit

Try to get there in the morning, around 8:00–9:00 AM. The light is softer, the heat is manageable, and it’s easier to enjoy the space without the big crowds. If you’re into photography, early morning is your best friend.

The Camel Ride is Optional — but Popular

Camel rides are offered everywhere around the pyramids. They make for great photos, and many visitors enjoy the experience. Just agree on the price before you get on, and be clear that the price includes getting off too — some locals might ask for more to help you down.

If riding a camel doesn’t appeal to you, that’s totally fine. You’ll still have a fantastic time exploring on foot

Take Your Time with the Photos

There’s a small hill at the panoramic viewpoint where you can see all three pyramids lined up. This is one of the best photo spots in all of Egypt. Most drivers and guides know this place, so ask to stop there if it’s not already in your plan.

Bring sunglasses — not just for the sun, but because the light reflects off the sand and can be harsh in photos without them.

You Can Go Inside the Pyramids (But It’s Not for Everyone)

Yes, you can enter one of the pyramids. Usually the Great Pyramid (Khufu) and the smaller Pyramid of Menkaure are open on rotation. The inside is narrow, steep, and warm — so it’s not for everyone. There isn’t much to see inside (no treasures left), but the feeling of being deep inside one of the oldest structures on Earth is powerful.

Some travelers say it’s unforgettable. Others are glad they stayed outside. It’s up to you.

Bring Water, Sunscreen, and a Hat

There’s very little shade at the site. Bring a small bottle of water, wear comfortable shoes (the ground is uneven in places), and use sunscreen even in winter. A hat or scarf is also a good idea — not just for the sun, but for style in your photos too.

Watch for Street Sellers — and Don’t Be Shy to Say No

You’ll meet plenty of locals selling postcards, souvenirs, scarves, or “ancient” coins (most of which were made last week). Some are polite, some are more persistent. A simple, friendly “la, shukran” (Arabic for “no, thank you”) usually does the trick.

Your guide can also help if anyone gets too pushy.

Visiting the pyramids isn’t just about seeing something old — it’s about standing where kings once stood, and where history still feels alive. It’s dusty, it’s bright, and sometimes a little chaotic… but it’s also unforgettable.
